This is my easy week, my return to normality. I started work at 9:00 a.m. and just finished at 2:00 a.m. but still, this is bliss compared to last week. Night night chaps. Time for some fizzy pop and an episode of Sherlock.

There’s a phenomenon here that still gives me the jibblies, but doesn’t phase a lot of Japanese people: It’s the ‘middle-aged man living with his mummy’ thing.
If you had translated as frequently as I have, news stories about men in their forties living with their mothers and then murdering them, you would immediately understand why we find it creepy when grown men live in the bedroom in which they read their first Gundam manga and discovered discovered how to rub their genie’s lamp to a now-deceased AV star in an increasingly tatty magazine clipping.
Their is an insularity, a Bates’ Motel quality, to families containing men who should have either fallen to the concrete and been dashed on life’s pavement or should have soared and become great hunting hawks. Instead they remain wingless foetal droppling birds that never left the nest.
I know you can save on rent that way, but that’s missing the point. You could also save money by not washing your clothes and selling your feet as ashtrays couldn’t you? But there’s some things that just don’t say ‘shagger of the year’ and I’ve just mentioned three of them.
In Japan, as in a lot of counties, the family is the scene of an awful lot of the crime and violence that occurs. Be sure to laugh and scoff at Republicans and Tories who tell you the nuclear family is the bedrock of morality, society, etc. There are plenty of people outside the white, middle-class, middle-income, middle-America, middle-England, middle-of-the-road, middle-way homogeneic, insect-like social group that they are envisioning who do not kill each other - but rather kiss and dance and laugh and love and merrily wile away the years, days, hours and minutes before the final fanfare. The family the right-wing envision has never really existed. They are nostalgic for a past that exists only in their imaginations.
